My dog pulls on walks. what do I do?

Updated: Mar 29

Dear Pet Patootie Family,

I wanted to connect with all our pet owners who utilize our services. One recurring challenge many dog owners face is leash pulling during walks.

Allow me to offer a few tips and recommendations to address this issue.

  • First and foremost, it's crucial to understand that the primary reason for leash pulling is that the dog believes they are in control. Therefore, your main objective is to regain control.

  • When your dog pulls in one direction, redirect them. Consistency is key here; ensure that you consistently redirect your dog's movements. Avoid yanking or dragging your dog, as this can be counterproductive. Instead, opt for quick and gentle redirections that provide a subtle reminder of who's leading the walk.

  • It's important to note the concept of opposition reflex. Dogs naturally resist when they feel pressure pulling them in a certain direction. To counter this, apply pressure briefly and release it immediately when the dog responds. If your dog doesn't respond initially, increase the pressure slightly, but always ensure that it's a quick and gentle action.

  • Another effective strategy is to consider changing your leash. If your dog continues to pull despite redirection, the pressure from the leash may not be sufficient. Opt for a thin, lightweight slip lead or a prong collar. These tools provide gentle pressure that encourages the dog to follow your lead without causing discomfort or harm. Remember, the size of the leash matters; choose one that's thin enough, like the width of your pinky finger, to ensure optimal effectiveness. Both slip leads and prong collars work by applying pressure when the dog attempts to steer in a different direction. This pressure prompts the dog to realign their movements with yours, making leash training more manageable.

Remember, the goal is not to constantly apply pressure but to use it as a gentle reminder for your dog to walk beside you. In conclusion, addressing leash pulling requires patience, consistency, and the right tools. By implementing these tips and recommendations, you can effectively train your dog to walk politely on a leash while enjoying your walks together.

Best regards,

Lexi
